Research Overview

The Oncology  Research laboratory is focused on the development and use of molecular imaging techniques, particularly positron emission tomography (PET), for in vivo functional imaging of tumours.  Employing a fast cutting edge PET/CT technology scanner, we non-invasively image changes in SUV  ( quantitative method) of different tumour biology in human subjects as a method of reserach in presurgical staging of tumour, treatment monitoring, localization of tumour recurrence, prediction of tumour aggressiveness and prognostication of patient survival. With positron-emitting tracers to visualise processes such as metabolism, proliferation, amino acid transport and hypoxia, we are able to assess important functional changes in tumours as they grow or respond to therapy. Further, we use PET probe to reveal how specific downstream signaling of tumour biology  could be indicated by the changes  shown by independent molecular markers for which phenomena may unfold novel discoveries in the methods of cancer detection and assessment of the treatment efficacy. Alongside PET, we employ ultrasound and high resolution quantitative  autoradiography study i.e mRNA  for preclinical and basic imaging research, with a focus on early clinical translational studies. In ultrasound experiments it is possible to non-invasively determine extent of tumour vascularisation and fluid balance to quantify effects of anti-cancer therapies that target angiogenesis in tumours. High resolution ex-vivo autoradiography further provides capability to determine functional properties of tumour subregions and assay responses at the level of individual cellular masses within a tumour.


Research Focus

Identification of specific molecular abnormalities in tumours, and defining their contribution to the cancer process and signaling , are leading to important changes in how we predict cancer aggressiveness while providing a much accurate presurgical staging and localisation of recurrent tumour for the purpose of tailoring to the treatment strategy. Such knowledge will allow more effective treatment adoption in the setting of the individual patient's genetic makeup and disease process. Our program therefore offers clinical and laboratory based projects that cover a range of research problems related to cancer development, progression of treatment, some with a definite clinical application and others that involve more basic questions of biological regulation. The broad program areas include pre-clinical molecular immunology and cellular biology , cancer imaging, epigenetic and genomic molecular biology.
